Lithium-ion battery: protection board and BMS (battery management system)

Jul 25, 2025

Nowadays: lithium batteries have become standard equipment for products in many fields. Although lithium-ion battery protection boards and BMS are both used to protect lithium batteries, they are different in function and role.

1. Functional difference

1. The lithium-ion battery protection board and BMS are obviously different in function. The lithium-ion battery protection board mainly plays the role of overcharge, over-discharge, overcurrent and short-circuit protection, ensuring that the battery can be powered off in time under abnormal conditions, thereby protecting the safety of the battery.

The core function of the lithium-ion battery protection board is to provide basic battery protection measures, such as preventing potential risks such as overcharge, over-discharge and short circuit. It monitors the key parameters of the battery in real time, such as voltage and current, to ensure that the circuit can be quickly cut off when the parameters exceed the normal range, thereby maintaining the integrity of the battery. Due to its compact size and moderate cost, the lithium-ion battery protection board is very suitable for applications where battery protection requirements are not very strict.

2. BMS is also called (battery management system). As the brain of the lithium battery, the importance of BMS is self-evident.

As the core component of the lithium battery system, BMS is mainly responsible for monitoring, controlling and managing the status of the battery pack to ensure that the battery pack operates under safe, stable and efficient conditions.

The function of BMS (battery management system) goes beyond basic battery protection. Its main function is to intelligently manage and maintain each battery unit, prevent overcharging and over-discharging of the battery, extend the service life of the battery, and monitor the status of the battery. The BMS battery management system unit usually includes a BMS battery management system, a control module, a display module, a wireless communication module, electrical equipment, a battery pack for powering electrical equipment, and a collection module for collecting battery information of the battery pack.

2. Different working principles

1. Lithium-ion battery protection board:

The lithium-ion battery protection board mainly relies on hardware protection, and its core components include IC, MOS, and electronic devices such as resistors and capacitors. Although its technical composition is relatively simple, this protection board has shown remarkable effects in protecting the battery from damage and is very practical. The working principle of the lithium-ion battery protection board is relatively straightforward. It mainly monitors the key parameters of the battery, such as voltage and current, through a circuit composed of carefully arranged electronic components. Once these parameters exceed the normal range, the protection board will respond quickly, send out a control signal, cut off the power supply of the battery or adjust the working state of the circuit to ensure the safety of the battery.

2. BMS (Battery Management System):

The working principle of BMS is more complicated than that of lithium-ion battery protection board. It is usually composed of multiple modules such as display module, communication, data acquisition, data processing and control strategy. BMS monitors the key parameters of the battery such as voltage, current, temperature in real time through sensors, and uses algorithms to conduct in-depth analysis and processing of these data. Based on the analysis results, BMS will intelligently formulate corresponding control strategies, such as adjusting the charging speed, implementing battery balancing and other measures, aiming to optimize the overall performance of the battery and extend its service life.

3. Application scenarios

1. Lithium-ion battery protection board:
Lithium-ion battery protection board has been widely used in digital fields such as portable electronic devices such as mobile phones, laptops, tablets, etc. due to its simple hardware protection characteristics. At the same time: it also plays an important role in small power systems such as two-wheeled/three-wheeled vehicles and cleaning robots. Since these devices have relatively low requirements for battery protection, lithium-ion battery protection boards can meet these needs well.

2. Application of BMS (Battery Management System):

BMS is mainly used in energy storage fields: industrial and commercial energy storage, UPS power supply and other occasions with strict requirements for battery management. In these occasions, the performance, safety and reliability of the battery are highly valued, so a more complex and advanced battery management system is needed to provide protection. It is also widely used in other power fields: including large electric forklifts/golf carts, two-wheeled/three-wheeled, various robot series, mild hybrid vehicles, plug-in hybrid vehicles, electric ships/yachts, etc.

In contrast, lithium-ion battery protection boards have significant differences from BMS in terms of function, working principle and application scenarios. When choosing a suitable battery protection solution, the specific application requirements and battery characteristics must be comprehensively considered.
