What to consider when charging lithium batteries

With the continuous advancement of technology, smart devices are becoming more and more popular and permeating into every aspect of our lives. As the driving force behind these devices such as mobile phones, wearable technology, and new energy vehicles, lithium batteries are inseparable from our daily lives. Therefore, charging lithium batteries has become an everyday necessity. However, many people are not aware of the important considerations when charging lithium batteries.

1. When charging for the first time, it is best to use the original charger to ensure the compatibility of the lithium battery and the charger.

2. Charge the battery when the charge is above 20%. Avoid letting the charge drop below 10% before charging. The goal is to keep the charge level around 80%, and it is recommended not to exceed 90%. If you expect to use the device for a long time and charging is inconvenient, you can choose to fully charge it. (Keeping the charge between 20% and 80% helps to extend the cycle life of lithium batteries

3. Avoid overcharging and overdischarging: Overcharging can cause excessive pressure inside the battery, resulting in temperature rise, which can destroy the chemical balance inside the lithium battery. Excessive discharge may cause the lithium battery voltage to be lower than the voltage threshold set by the protection board, causing the battery to enter a dormant state, thereby affecting the battery capacity and its cycle life.

4. High temperature environment: Do not charge lithium batteries in a high temperature environment. If the charging temperature of a lithium battery exceeds 45 degrees Celsius, it will speed up the chemical reaction rate inside the battery and generate excessive heat, thereby increasing the risk of battery explosion and fire. In addition, high temperature will evaporate the electrolyte in the battery, thereby reducing its capacity and cycle life.

5. Low temperature charging: When the temperature is below 0 degrees Celsius, the activity of the lithium battery is very low, resulting in a very slow charging speed and charging efficiency far lower than expected.

6. Charging and discharging: In the case of rapid discharge of lithium batteries, it is best not to charge them immediately afterwards, as this can easily cause the battery temperature to rise, increase the risk of accidents, and accelerate battery aging.

7. Use fast charging with caution: Fast charging involves increasing the charging current. According to Joule's law (Q = I²Rt), the higher the charging current, the faster the lithium ions move, causing the battery temperature to rise faster. Long-term fast charging will reduce the battery's capacity, cycle life and accelerate its aging.

8. Charging environment: When charging, please pay attention to the objects near the charger. It is best to avoid placing metal, fragile, liquid, flammable or other potentially dangerous items nearby to prevent short circuits, damage, leakage, and even fire accidents.

As lithium battery technology becomes more and more mature, many battery systems are now equipped with intelligent power-off protection. When the temperature is too high, full or other unsafe conditions occur, this protection automatically cuts off the power to ensure safety. Even so, we still need to follow the above precautions to make the lithium battery last longer and ensure the safety of the use process.
